What is Discipleship?

Simply put, discipleship is purposefully and lovingly helping someone follow Jesus. Jesus Himself made disciples (Matt 13:52; 27:54). We as His followers continue the effort today. It takes both corporate and individual effort.

Corporately, churches that properly observe the ordinances and teach the commands of Jesus are central to making disciples (Matt 28:18-20; Acts 14:21; 1 Cor 11:1).

Individually, discipleship is demanded of all Christians, not just the clergymen, pastors, and missionaries.

When do I make disciples?

We make disciples regularly at our main gatherings, our Sunday worship service (Heb 10:24-25). However, we certainly do not wish to limit discipleship to 60-90 minutes on Sundays! We encourage every believer to make disciples outside of church building and grounds: at home, at schools, at work, and other public places. For example, apostle Paul trained his disciples at Ephesus on weekdays at a lecture hall (Acts 19:9).

Who should I disciple?

Non-Christians

We should disciple non-Christians by introducing them to Jesus and sharing His message of salvation. We must reach the lost with bold and biblical evangelism (Rom 1:16; Gal 1:6-9; 1 Thess 2:2). We suggest you use Gospel tracts and short workbooks (lasting 4-7 lessons) like Christianity Explained and Simple Christianity.

Fellow Christians

We disciple fellow Christians by reviewing the Gospel, studying and applying the Word together, and fulfilling all the “one another” commands of Scripture. For that end, we must warn, comfort, uphold, exhort each other more than once a week (1 Thess 5:14; Heb 3:13). We suggest that you use books and workbooks such as Survival Kit by Ralph Neighbour and The Walk: Everyday Spiritual Growth. You can do the homework at home individually and then meet other Christians to share your answers.

How do I get started?

First, become a follower of Jesus. Follow the rest of the steps outlined in “Next Steps”. Our church leaders will direct you to opportunities for discipleship. We believe disciple-making is such an important facet of the Christian life that we devote an hour before our worship service to practice it. From 9:45-10:45, you’ll be in pairs or in groups of 3-5. In pairs or groups, we pray for opportunities among the lost, discuss books and workbooks, memorize Scripture, study sound doctrine, address tough discipleship scenarios, and encourage each other to grow spiritually.
